EMIGRANTE IN PIAZZA DUCA D’AOSTA DAVANTI AL GRATTACIELO PIRELLI, MILANO, 1968

The 1968 photograph Emigrato Sardo in front of the Pirelli building, Milan is a document of great sociological value. The author is photojournalist Uliano Lucas, born in Milan in 1942, a committed witness to the social and political transformations of our country. In the foreground we see an emigrant loaded with all his belongings, bewildered upon arrival in the metropolis where he will go to swell the workforce in the factories. Towering over him is a symbol of modernity and wealth, the newly completed Pirelli skyscraper, the center of economic power. The building symbolically projects itself upward but at the same time seems to weigh down with its luxury on the man standing motionless on the tracks. The social contrast is sharpened by the presence of a man in the background, well-dressed and in motion, secure in his role in the world. It is a critical account of inequality and Italian migration that speaks to our consciences.
