DA IL DONO, 2000-954-12: RITUALE VUDÙ CASCATE DI AGUAS BLANCAS, HAITI, 2000
In this reportage photograph, Giorgia Fiorio documents society and culture together. The subject of the photograph is a Voodoo ritual, a syncretic religion that mixes Christianity and African traditions. The ritual takes place at Aguas Blancas Falls in Haiti, a sacred place for Voodoo worshippers where nature spirits are believed to reside. The photographer portrays some participants in the ritual immersing in the water, while others observe or pray. The scene conveys mystery and sacredness, but also participation and sharing. The photograph is part of the series The Gift, made between 2000 and 2010 in thirty different countries. The theme is the relationship between the individual and the Sacred and the bodily practices that express sacrifice, purification, offering and thanksgiving. The series is the result of a long research work to discover human spirituality.
